“Have you lost your mind?”
Clark winced; he had expected Lois to be upset, but that was probably an understatement. She was literally breathing fire, eyes flashing and getting up in his space.
“Lois,” he tried, lifting his hands up in a placating manner, while his eyes darted around to make sure no one else entered the barn or possibly overheard. “I know you’re mad …”
“Mad!” Lois exclaimed, and somehow, despite all his powers, an angry Lois still had the power to make him flinch when she was approaching him in a threatening manner. “Of course I’m mad! You’re insane!”
“It’s not that bad,” Clark tried, though he couldn’t quite bring himself to believe it even as he said it.
“It’s not that bad,” she repeated, scowling. “The whole world thinks we’re dating. Because of you!”
“I doubt it’s the whole world,” Clark replied, as calmly as he could, even though inside, he was panicking. “Not a lot of general interest in the governor elections in Kansas and we’re not even …”
“Clark!” Lois cut him off. “What were you thinking?”
In the face of her anger, he found himself getting defensive. “I was thinking that I was tired of people assuming my dad was cheating on my mom! How were you not more upset?”
“Not everyone thinks that,” Lois gritted out. “And it’s politics- this is what happens. The other party tries to play dirty and tabloids thrive on it.”
“That doesn’t make it okay,” Clark argued. “They shouldn’t get to spread lies and talk about my parents like that- talk about you like that. It was like you were some sort of homewrecker …”
“I’ve heard worse,” Lois said dismissively. “Your dad was very kind to hire me but I’m a young, college dropout. What did you think they were going to say?”
She was acting tough on the outside, but he could see the hurt in her eyes as she spoke, and it made him even more unhappy and this time upset on her behalf.
“That’s not okay,” Clark insisted. “You don’t deserve that. I’m not going to stand by and let them talk that way about you, about my family, without defending them. And look, I’m sorry- I didn’t mean to tell them that we’re dating, but it just came out.”
Lois let out a deep breath, fingers pinching her nose. “Do you always feel the need to save everyone?”
“Maybe not everyone,” Clark said, sensing her anger fading, clearly despite Lois's best efforts.
"We have to fix this," Lois decided. "Tell them that you didn't mean it."
"And then what?" Clark challenged. "They'll think that I'm covering up for the affair!"
"There is no affair!" Lois shot back.
"What do you think they're going to say, Lois?" Clark pointed out.
"Then what do you want us to do- just let them think we're dating?" Lois asked incredulously. "Us? Really? No one is going to believe that for a second."
Well, when she put it that way ... she was right. No one was going to believe that they were dating. His heart sank as the implications of what he had done in a moment of haste really fully hitting him. Yet he knew that he was right too; there was no way to successfully take it back without adding more suspicions and the last thing his parents needed were more eyes on them, or him, lest they find out more while looking for relationship drama.
"What do we do?" Clark asked, hesitating.
"I don't know, Smallville, but you better think fast."
