Considering their combative personalities, it should’ve happened a lot sooner, but somehow, for the first six months, things went pretty smoothly. Until Oliver suggested that the two of them move in with him.
Clark and Lois had their own apartment, close to the Planet, Ollie had his penthouse, and they alternated between those spots, but it was time for a change, in Oliver’s opinion.
“No,” Lois said immediately. “I’m sorry, but no.”
“Why not?” Oliver argued. “Look, it’s only a matter of time before the neighbors start talking about how often I am over here.”
“And no one will talk if you move us in?” Lois retorted.
“Guys,” Clark started, but he couldn’t get a word in.
“How long can we keep this up?” Oliver demanded. “I’m tired of sneaking in, or having you both sneak out.”
“I mean, there is still the farm if we want to get away,” Clark tried again.
“For a weekend,” Oliver agreed. “But that doesn’t work for day in, day out.”
Lois folded her arms across her chest, and pursed her lips. “It just won’t work, Ollie. You’re not thinking this through.” Looking over at Clark, she added, “We just don’t think it’s the right time. Maybe we can figure out another option in the future.”
It was the initial “we” that hit him the hardest, because clearly she was talking about just her and Clark.
“Nice to know I get an opinion on all of this,” Oliver muttered, swallowing the sudden lump in this throat. “Here I thought I was part of the ‘we’. My mistake. You two clearly have everything covered.” Lois looked like she had been slapped.
“Oliver,” Clark said, frowning. “She didn’t mean-”
“Pretty clear what she meant, Clark,” Oliver replied firmly. He shook his head and turned to leave. “Hey, let me know when I’m allowed to be involved. Or you want sex.”
“Ollie, don’t act like an ass,” Lois snapped, visibly frustrated. “You’re being unreasonable.”
He just watched her, expression blank. “Guess I’ll go be an unreasonable ass somewhere else then.”
Before they could respond, he was out the door, not knowing what else to say and needing time to heal his newly broken heart.
They didn’t come after him, and Clark could’ve definitely easily caught up.
And that was the part that hurt the most.
