I think it counts! All sorts of memory loss would qualify, no matter the cause, and there is something really intriguing about not remembering someone but being drawn to them anyway. That's something I love about the amnesia trope. Unfortunately, I don't ship/read Clex anymore (and probably since the beginnings of my time in fandom) but it's great that you love the fic so much, despite not being interested in the trope itself! :)
