That's true. It can go the other way too - if the canon is too light hearted, sometimes, people make up darker/more action themed stories and AU possibilities and vice versa. I guess it depends on how big the fandom is and which way it leans.
Oh man, yeah, that is something I've seen play out in many fandoms. Your plan is the best one! The drama is rarely worth it.
