Day 13: Squicks - What are some things that squick you in fandom - not necessarily "icky", though it can be. From anything involving blood, to bad grammar.

There are a few things that squick me out. The main one is probably graphic descriptions of bodily functions (like people constantly vomiting- I will scroll right past it, if I really like the fic). I can't deal with a/b/o as a trope, and anything with too much graphic violence/torture is not for me either. Same with rape/sexual assault.

On a less serious note, I don't like to read fics set in a first person POV. I see it and I click the back button pretty quickly. Same with fics that have huge chunks of text with minimal paragraphs. As far as the grammar goes, I don't mind a few mistakes here and there, because I know I make them, especially now that I am self editing without a beta, but if it is just too much, yeah, it does get distracting for me.

And I've lost interest in reading fics where there is open character/ship bashing, even if I don't like the other ship/characters. I get second hand embarrassment way too easily so I know I've written it in the past, but I can't read it anymore, when it's just the main love interest just "showing up" their rival.

Having read RPF mostly, I've avoided character bashing (it was usually just the douchey actor being cast as the douche). However, it's very obvious (I hit post early!) in some Smallville fics with Lana... to the point where it's funny. I agree, though, extreme character bashing is a no.

Bad grammar is alright for me too. I once got into a major argument with someone over grammar in Fanfiction (and I really hate those people who get entitled about it when they can just click out!), so I feel obligated to give anyone with grammar mistakes a chance. Lack of paragraphs is a no from me too. Literally cannot even process the words like that even if I wanted to. In the past I'd make a PDF and edit it myself, but ain't nobody got time for that.

I think the Supernatural fandom is credited as being the reason why A/B/O got so popular, but I feel like it just snowballed out of nowhere. I remember reading a few and not feeling too strongly about it, but... people seem to really like them? Each to their own, lol!

Lol, Welling has been the douchey ex-boyfriend/ dumb one/stalker/whatever villain I needed him to be in quite a few of my RPF fics too. FWIW, I actually think it's because he kept to himself IRL that he ended up being cast in that role. Rosenbaum was almost always the crazy, funny one. And usually, him and Tom were a side pairing. All I remember knowing about Tom back then was that he was married to Jamie and they had horses. I think the villain thing might come from him not interacting with fans much either. He's obviously pulled a 180 now, but the guy that runs KSiteTV is still salty about how Tom treated him when the show was on, lol.
