In your own space, write a promo, manifesto or primer for your fave character, ship or fandom.

I did a [livejournal.com profile] ship_manifesto for one of my OTPs, the reason I actually began writing fanfic in the first place, Clark Kent/Oliver Queen from Smallville, years ago here.

For a 'tell me why' challenge, I wrote about why I love another of my main OTPs, Clark/Lois (Smallville) here.

Recently, I did a character study on one of my favorite characters, Lois Lane (Smallville version specific) here.

Challenge 15:

In your own space, create your own challenge.

First of all, I can't believe this is the last challenge! It really flew by. I managed to complete all 15, which feels like succeeding at a personal challenge that I didn't know I had. A quick thank you to all the mods who put in so much hard work in running this! Also to all the people who have commented here at any point- I enjoyed and appreciated seeing all your responses and interacting with you and I hope to come across you sometime in the near future.

This Snowflake Challenge really gave me a chance to interact with those that I normally would not have come across and I appreciate that. Not just that but the interaction in general. So that leads me to two personal challenge, which you are welcome to take on yourselves.

1. This year, step out of your comfort zone.

Interpret that however you would like. I know I am a perfectionist- it is not a brag; it's actually really inconvenient and frustrating because I'm often scared to try new things or get mad when something doesn't come out right the first time. My family has commented on it too.

This year, I want to be less afraid and try new things, in and out of fandom. Take a step I wouldn't have taken. As long as I'm not hurting anyone, I shouldn't be afraid to fail.

2. Participate.

From what I have realized from reading the responses to these challenges, people miss the older fandom days with more interaction and I think this is a 'be the change' situation. Whether that involves commenting, recc'ing, creating and/or all of the above, it can be done! We may not be able to go back to when forums were popular and you couldn't keep up with your LJ flist, but surely there are ways to bring that kind of activity to what we have now. I'm even figuring out Discord!

I was lucky enough to find two co-mods so that I could help run my first AO3 challenge. This year, maybe I will run my own community or lead something else. Someone suggested a more general comment_bingo (I have to find out who did that to credit them too), with permission from the people over at the Steve/Tony one who run a ship specific one, and even though it might be work, it hasn't left my head and I might try that. We'll see.

After all, like I said, it's worth a shot. :D

Challenge 13:

In your own space, share a favorite memory about fandom: the first time you got into fandom, the last time a fanwork touched your heart, wild times with fellow fans (whether on-line or off-line), a lovely comment you’ve received or have left for someone.

I got into fandom, because no one was really writing this rare ship (Clark/Oliver from Smallville) that I was suddenly into so I was like "maybe me?" While I had written stories before as a kid, which I used to pretend were Bollywood movies (don't ask), I definitely remember having to get over a mind block to actually write fic and the awkward moment writing out my first fic on a word doc. And of course it spiraled from there. I discovered LJ through a google search when I was looking for fic (I was already reading on FFN).

I think my favorite fandom memories involve the friends I made- all the interactions we've had, and even the gifts (fics, icons, etc) we've given each other. Someone once made me a Clark/Oliver fanvid for my birthday to the song I had always associated for them (GDI so mad I didn't download it) and honestly it legit made me cry. A part of me has always felt guilty for just dropping fandom like I did (I tend to be someone who gets fixations and wander off) and I do wish I had kept in touch with some of them. I was very grateful to find see some still active, and others I have come across in other platforms; I'm also happy that there was some sort of activity going on DW, and the nice people I've come across over the past almost 2 years since I've been back in fandom. Definitely enjoyed all the discussions. ♥

I have to add though that I was searching for something else last year and I came across an old comment I got on an earlier fic and it was basically someone being like, "What did Oliver ever do to you, except be handsome". It made me laugh. And also sums up how dramatic and angsty I could be. :D

For all the times I am like "ugh, all that fandom drama means I'm staying on the edge from now on", it is good to remember that there were a lot of great memories, and when done right, fandom can be a lovely community where you can create great bonds, without even knowing each other's name.

Challenge #12:

In your own space, tell us who you would recast in a film, tv series or webseries, or maybe someone voicing a cartoon or videogame. Or who would you cast to play a character in a book, comic or maybe even your own fiction! Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I like Amy Adams, but my ideal casting for Lois Lane (outside of Erica Durance, who I adore in Smallville) would've been either Cobie Smulders or Rashida Jones. They both have this look (even outside the dark hair) that I really imagine a Lois to be like.

Also, if the DCEU ever cast an Oliver Queen, I would want it to be Charlie Hunnam. He seems just perfect for the role, at least in likeness.

Challenge #11:

In your own space, Interact with someone.

I think this challenge has given me the opportunity to interact with plenty of people that I normally wouldn't, but also I've been trying to fill and leave prompts at the 3 Sentence Ficathon. That is the new post. If you want to fill older prompts or read fills, you can still do so at the first 3SF post.

Challenge #10:

In your own space, rec a fanwork (fic, art, vid, playlist, anything!) you did not create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Reccing things! My favorite ... and I cannot limit myself to 1, because rules are meant to be broken. So I'll add a zero and it's fitting because it is the 10th challenge. So here are my 10 go to recs, in variety of fandoms/ships:

1. A Road Paved in Gold by [archiveofourown.org profile] nadin (Wonder Woman/DCEU, Diana/Steve, Mature, 327,156)- this fic is set right toward the end of WW 2017 and goes off from there with the 2017 Justice League movie incorporated eventually, and it is excellent.
2. Clark Kent is Dead by [archiveofourown.org profile] brokenhighways (Smallville, Clark/Lois, Not Rated, 14,516)- A in depth look into Pandora!Clark, how he ended up in that situation and all that he learned. Such a good character study and all the Clois intertwined was lovely.
3. i'll pretend you're watching the sky too by [archiveofourown.org profile] buries (Gilmore Girls, Rory/Jess, PG-13, 24,904)- Okay so this was a gift to me but that doesn't change how absolutely incredible this s3 canon divergence was! Her Jess is so on point and the friendships/platonic relationships have such a big part of the story and I love that.
4. Eleven Men and a Baby by [archiveofourown.org profile] andrealyn (Ted Lasso (TV), Roy/Keeley, team, PG-13, 6,430)- Keeley finds out she is pregnant and the whole team wants to be involved. They nail the voices and the dynamics and this whole story made me smile.
5. walk with me by [archiveofourown.org profile] obsidienne (Star Trek: AOS, Kirk/Spock, Mature, 12,110)- set post ID and part of a series that is also very good. Love that Kirk weighs the consequences of what has happened and how he has internal doubts too. And I'm a sucker for some Spock pining!
6. Phantom Limbs by [archiveofourown.org profile] Bagheera (X-Men: ATS, Erik/Charles, PG-13, 8717)- One of the first XMFC fics I have read and an old favorite.
7. Friends? I'd Say Family by [archiveofourown.org profile] mockturtletale (Suits, Mike/Harvey, PG-13, 11988)- s1 AU in which Harvey has a kid. Kid fics can be tough but this one worked for me, because it felt like they were both still very IC and of course Harvey would have a smart talking child too.
8. Of the Devil's Party by [archiveofourown.org profile] mermaiddrunk (Elementary, Joan/Jamie, Mature, 52692)- In which Jamie starts writing letters to Joan after she is cleared. I love this ship and the story had me hooked.
9. we could jump the state lines (we only get the one life) by [archiveofourown.org profile] notcaycepollard (MCU, Bucky/Sam, Explicit, 33533) - one of the first longer Winterfalcon stories and I love the take on Bucky, Sam, and their relationship as it is a canon divergence post TWS.
10. you'll wait a long time by [archiveofourown.org profile] nanasekei (MCU, Steve/Tony, Explicit, 16516)- Where Steve and Tony connect at a wedding and it goes from there. I really love their writing in general. Really a great source of Stony fics, especially if you love Steve.

Challenge #8:

In your own space, celebrate a personal win from the past year: it can be a list of fanworks you're especially proud of, a gift of your time to the community, a quality or skill you cultivated in yourself, something you generally feel went well.

Oh man, I'm never good at this type of thing but I'll try.

Fandom:

  • I only got back into fandom in March of 2020 after leaving for 8 years, but I did a lot of writing in 2021, resulting in over 100k of words. I also got into exchanges, and I ended up completing 16 fics.

  • Speaking of exchange fics, I was able to get of my comfort zone. I did get to write for my main fandom (Smallville) but I also got a chance to try new ships/fandoms and I ended up liking how they turned out.

    Non-fandom:

  • Baking has been one of my main hobbies during quarantine and I tried a few new things there too, including multiple ice cream cakes and working on my decorating/layer cake skills. :D
  • svgurl: (misc: pillsbury dough boy happy)

    Challenge #7:

In your own space, tell us about 3 fandom resources, spaces, or communities you use or enjoy. (One or two is fine, especially if you're in a smaller fandom!) Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I'm going to list two comms & a website.

    1. [community profile] recthething: a great place for reccing fanworks. If you don't feel like making your own post, they even have one even Thursday in which you can leave them in the comments!

    2. [community profile] fancake: another recc'ing comm, with a monthly theme. Helpful place to find both newer and older works you may have forgotten about and have a chance to share some of your faves.

    3. DC Comics Database- as someone who has only read a few comics but wants to add in elements in Smallville, it is helpful to get ideas from here, especially for characters or trying to figure out a map. Yes, I do look up fictional city maps. :D

Okay, thanks to some helpful encouragement (all the love to [personal profile] brokenhighways & [personal profile] peaked), I decided to start writing my Clark/Lois fake dating AU. Here's a small snippet under the cut.

    Challenge #5:

In your own space, talk about an idea you wish you had the time / talent / energy to do. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I would love to learn to make fanvids and gifs, because then I could do so for some of my favorite rare ships, but I don't think I have the patience. I always have so many ideas for songs that would work for certain couples yet I can't summon up the willpower.

For fics, I always have so many ideas bouncing around in my head and just not enough time for all of them. The main ones:

  • Clark/Lois fake dating fic set in s5- this is the one that has been in my head for the longest, but I can't decide how to rework certain aspects of canon so it stays in my head.

  • A Clark/Oliver fic that has Clark kidnapped by an evil version of Oliver and then when he is saved, he has some attachment issues that Oliver tries to help him get over (and is pining). I think the problem here is it would be slightly darker than anything I've written and I don't know if I could pull it off.

  • Sam/Bucky IW/Endgame AU where they survive the snap and Steve (and someone I haven't thought of yet) don't. I was going to do this for a Big Bang story I signed up for last year, but couldn't put it together, because I didn't know how I would work out the time travel situation.

  • DCEU/Aquaman/WW fic where Atlanna ends up in Themyscira instead. The problem is that I don't have a solid plot or where to go. I just think it would be neat lol

I've definitely stated making note of my plot bunnies as to not forget, but we'll see if I ever get around to doing any.

    Challenge #4:

In your own space, make a list of things that you wish existed in fandom or elsewhere, and/or that you'd like someone to create or do for you. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

A machine that will write my fics for me! :D Oh, wait, this is not the impossible wish list? Okay, for real then:

  • Book recs: I really want to get back into reading but I don't know where to start. I really like mysteries (not thrillers though) and the Jane Austen-type books (I also loved North & South).

  • Comic book recs! I would like to start getting into DC Comics this year but I'm a little confused on where to start or if there are online resources on where to access them. Clark, Lois, and Clark/Lois are my favorites.

  • More fics, fic recs, fanart/icons, fanvids, and/or fanvid recs for my favorite ships, especially the rarepairs (listed below):
    Smallville: Clark/Oliver, Clark/Lois/Oliver, Lois/Tess, Lois/Lana, Lana/Tess
    Gilmore Girls: Lane/Dave
Ted Lasso: Sam/Jamie (though I would love Ted Lasso icons in general! Where do people get those?)
    MCU: Sam/T'Challa, Sam/Erik Killmonger, Nebula/Rhodey

  • Better ways to interact with fandom people, especially to squee about ships and fic ideas together. Yes, I'm nostalgic for the peak LJ days. I do miss having a regular beta too. I like Tumblr, but it doesn't work that way, and I am not quite sure where the majority of people hang out on DW. Also, I have no idea how to use Discord. My fellow co-mods over at Rare Femslash Exchange probably know that by now.

  • Better tagging system on AO3. I wish people would learn that you don't have to tag every ship/character, especially the "past" relationships or ones that you're bashing. I wish we could get a primary and secondary ship filter. That would be cool but I'm not a coder so I have no idea how that would work.

  • More of a live and let live attitude. The block feature (something else I wished existed on AO3) exists. I wish people didn't feel the need to justify their ships. I hope people are writing what they like, even if it isn't the most popular thing. It is sad to see burn out over lack of interest.

  • In note to the above, more feedback! I know no one is "owed" comments, but if you like something, leave a quick note. The author will be grateful. And I do kinda wish comments were mandatory in exchanges, but that is a path I don't want to go down right now.
  • svgurl: (smallville: costume)
    Challenge #3:

In your own space, put some favorite characters into an AU, fuse some favorite canons together, talk about your favorite AU/fusion tropes, or tell us why AU/fusions aren’t your cup of tea. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I do enjoy AUs, though there are some I prefer to read over others. Depending on the canon, I can be pretty picky. I will always read a 'shop AU- I really enjoy coffeeshop AUs but for the right couples, flowershop AUs are fun too, and someone recently reminded me that bookshop ones should be more of a thing, because yes, they should. College AUs can be good. Fairytales/movie/book AUs are great too. I did the Fairytale Exchange last year and I enjoyed writing a Thor/Sif Beauty and the Beast AU. Really helped me think outside the box. There are a lot of Pride and Prejudice AUs but I personally would love a reason to write a Persuasion one. I just need to decide on the ship that it would fit.

When it comes to writing (and reading), I still lean toward canon divergent AUs more than anything else. It is really appealing and fun to think about how things could have been different if one event had been tweaked- how these two characters had gotten together sooner, what if they had done x instead of y. Same with the different first meeting AUs. What if one had shown up at an earlier or later part of the other one's lives? That kind of thing.

The challenge for me when I write is for the characters to still remain recognizable to their canon counterparts. I'm currently working on a role reversal fic for Clark and Lois from Smallville, where Lois is the alien from Krypton but I had her adopted by the Lanes and Clark staying with the Kents. I wanted to keep some of their core personalities in tact rather than switching them completely, because those are the characters I fell in love with.

Going off that point, that is why I like when the superhero characters somehow get to keep their roles- Diana is still Wonder Woman, Steve Rogers (or Sam Wilson!) is still Captain America ... that kind of thing. Of course, I will read a mundane AU from time to time. I have a soft spot for Hallmark movie AUs and one of my goals is to actually write one, because a few of the shows I love (Gilmore Girls, Smallville) have that whole small town setting ready to go. It depends on my mood and the plot when it comes to reading fics. If their character seems completely different, it is usually not for me though.

In general, it is just great the way people can take established canons and put these characters into whole new worlds and come up with awesome ideas on how to make it happen. I always do admire the creativity. I may not read them all but it's nice that they're there.

    Challenge #2

In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

    Fandom:
  • write more treats- I am hoping to budget my free time a little better and sign up for fewer exchanges so I can write a few treats, which I didn't have time for last year
  • finish my latest WIP
  • Make fic rec lists- I used to love to rec fics and I haven't done it lately

    Non-fandom:
  • work out more consistently - I got into a better habit in latter half of the year but I need to keep it up
  • keep up with friends more consistently
  • start reading books again- aiming for one a month
  • learn new recipes, especially Indian ones from my mom, and start to cook more of a variety
